Penguin Cold Freight - Fuel Adjustment Factor

The Fuel Adjustment Factor (FAF) is a mechanism to avoid having to change pallet rates every time there are changes in fuel prices. Fuel makes up between 15% and 30% of a transport business cost structure, depending on the mix of truck sizes and the ratio of metro work to linehaul work. The formula uses a base rate for diesel in cents per litre. The bigger trucks use about .5 - .6 litres per km, or put the other way around they do about 1.7km per litre.

In September 2008 the fuel re-pricing changed from monthly to weekly.
